Re: benjamins 1976 1152cc turbo (Project)
Starting to get a move on now
Picked up block and 0.080'' GR pistons
Block is bored and honed and new cam bearings . Pistons will stay flat tops as I want to have compression in the 9's this time.
Started fixing the passenger side floor pan , this has turned out to be in worse condition than the drivers side. The A-panel was perfect and a shame to have to remove but it was hiding some nasty rust in the passenger A-pillar. The sill was also full of rust and had to remove the front section.
Cutting is all but there , will get stuck into fitting the new panels next weekend

like the new shiney pistons what comp are you aiming for, like any panel repair its whats behind that causes all the problems. like i've found out but your getting through it which is good,

Looking for in the 9's with comp, will have to cc head when i get back.
Its a 998 cooper head 12g295, only have a minimal skim so with flat tops I guess 9.5:1
Graham assures me this will be fine with his pistons up to 20psi

how much did the pistons cost. how high are you going to go with boost. do you want mid 9's to help with off boost driveability.
i know alot of people are starting to run higher comp in turbos to deal with off boost driveability, it also helps with Megajolt and Megasquirt, which helps gets better fueling and timing etc.

Higher compression will deffinatly help off boost drivability , but the main reason I want is to help with turbo spool.
My motor was a bit laggy with the gt25 and although very drivable wasnt all that responsive under boost. Higher comp will make it much more responsive and hopfully bring on boost sooner. I still want to go up to 20psi but will probably only use 15psi for street use . The power it made at 15 last time was starting to get silly .
Also on the plus side higher comp = better fuel economy
Im pretty sure graham said $330 for pistons

Re: benjamins 1976 1152cc turbo (Project)
nice man good progress sooner or later ive gotta do the dreaded body repairs lol
good to see that people are not so scared of compression lol
you need to remember that compression is once you close the valves clearly an open cylinder will not make any compression..
you may have a static 12:1 ratio that is displacement divide combustion chamber but in the real world its only 10:1 by the time the valve closes and the piston part way up the bore
10 to 1 dynamic compression 20 psi alcohol fuels is the way forward imo

Thanks I ll make some more as I do more work , they are easy to do with the go-pro.
Yeah I love the TIG , welds are so small and smooth and I feel I have more control. I just skim over the top with a flap wheel on the grinder and done.

Finally I did some more work !!
The Passenger side floor and sill are completed , painted POR-15 on the inside of the sill to hopfully preven this happening again.
Inner a-panel welded and outer a-panel sikaflexed on and tacked into position. Checked with my good door skin, looks like we are good to go . Next on the list is to put back on the ground and get ther boot, bonnet and doors sorted.

WOW Ben, going to town on it, great stuff, looks like you had a bit more than expected to do to the body, Just think about how good it will be once finished.
will you be going original colour?
is your drive train etc all together ready to go back in?
Grant

Hey Grant !!
Yeah the car had a lot of hidden rust that's for sure, but at least I know its all gone now. The colour will be original which is scarlet o hara.
Gearbox is all good to go , but still need to put engine back together. hopefully will get some done in Uni holidays .
